Agroforestry Workshop
Introductory Workshop in Syntropic Agroforestry (27.10. - 02.11.2025)
Service Description
This updated version of our workshop, now seven-days long, has been readjusted towards the goal of capacitating the participants in creating and managing agroforestry systems. Participants will learn how to make a site assessment, participate in creating an agroforestry design, which will then also be planted, and be taught how to prune trees within a series of guided tree pruning practicals. Throughout the program, the farm serves as a living classroom: established agroforestry systems provide a dynamic environment where learning unfolds directly through interaction with the land. Program Highlights 1) Implementation of an agroforestry system demonstrating principles like stratification and natural succession. 2) Guided tour of different agroforestry fields, spanning ~30,000m², each with a unique species composition, objective, and all within different developmental stages. 3) Tree pruning practicals, emphasizing context specific management techniques. 4) Theoretical foundations of Syntropic Farming: principles and philosophy. 5) Archaeological visit with Manuel Calado, exploring 12,000 years of human impact on the ecology of the Alentejo region - giving a framework for the experience. 6) Linking theory to action: concepts are demonstrated live in the test fields, reinforcing practical embodiment of the workshops contents. 7) Emphasis on contextual application: adapting Syntropic methods to varied environmental and cultural landscapes. Why Quinta das Abelhas? Quinta das Abelhas has evolved into a unique Living Laboratory, where the principles of Syntropic Farming are explored across a diverse range of agroforestry experiments. These test fields serve not only as educational tools for students, but as a living library for instructors—rich in real-world examples, layered context, and dynamic systems. Beyond the Learning This workshop is a powerful networking opportunity, connecting practitioners, land stewards, and ecological designers from across regions and disciplines. Upon booking, our team will personally reach out to provide a list of relevant articles and resources to support your learning journey in preparation for the workshop.
