Service Description

This is a five day in person Workshop merging theoretical explanation of Syntropic farming together with collaborative practical application to elaborate the learning experience of said concepts. Many of the lessons learned from the practical experiments conducted at Quinta das Abelhas throughout the past years will be shared. The workshop program includes: 1) Implementation of an exemplary plantation that demonstrate principles of Syntropic farming such as stratification and natural succession 2) Demonstration and explanation of ten different agroforestry test fields established throughout the past five years (test fields with different species composition, objectives, and installation techniques planted at different moments) - Total area ~30.000m2 3) Management of established plantations of different ages Selective weeding + Interplanting + Demonstration of tree pruning 4) Introduction to principles and theoretical concepts of Syntropic Farming 5) Relating theoretical lessons to practical demonstrations in the test fields 6) Demonstration of the importance of context specific applications Throughout the past six years Quinta das Abelhas has turned into a unique Living-Laboratory where one can observe many of the principles and techniques of Syntropic farming being applied within a variety of contexts. Ten different agroforestry test fields with different species composition, treatment, and age serve as an open air classroom for the students during the course, and a living book for the teacher to draw upon during his explanations. The teacher of the workshop, a trained agronomist and close student of Ernst Götsch, lives within these plantations, and works within them on a daily basis. The variety of contexts in which agroforestry has been applied on the farm allows for a diversity of activities during the workshops practicals. Aside from the learning experience this workshop provides a unique networking opportunity.
